San Carlos Parks & Recreation To Hold 2nd Annual "Symphony At Sunset" Fundraiser

July 10, 2012

Symphony At Sunset To Be Held At Burton Park

Burton Park’s tennis courts will soon be transformed into a concert venue as the San Carlos Parks & Recreation Foundation holds its 2nd Annual Symphony at Sunset Fundraiser featuring the renowned St. Peter’s Chamber Orchestra. The fundraiser is a benefit for Burton Park’s Phase II improvements which includes proposed bocce ball courts, a stage, and renovations to the park’s existing aging basketball courts. The City has approved the plans for Burton Park Phase II provided funds are raised, which is where the Parks and Recreation Foundation of San Carlos comes in. Formed in 2007 by a group of San Carlos residents, the Foundation was a response to the growing need for park improvements around the city at a time of dramatic public funding cutbacks. Using a public/private partnership model, the Parks and Recreation Foundation came together in an effort to secure private monies aimed at facility improvements, program implementation, and other services of the San Carlos Parks & Recreation Department. The Foundation raised over $400,000 in private donations for Burton Park’s Phase I renovations, unveiled in 2009.

The San Carlos Parks & Recreation Foundation

“The Parks & Recreation Foundation of San Carlos plays an instrumental role in providing much needed financial support to help enhance the city’s park system. Without the Foundation’s support the first fully inclusive playground and very popular water feature at Burton Park would not exist”, says Doug Long, San Carlos Parks & Recreation Department Director.  The proposed Phase II renovations at Burton Park carry a price tag of $1.15 million with the Foundation’s goal of raising a minimum $250,000 toward the effort. “San Carlos Citizens have long identified the City’s Parks & Recreation facilities and programs as essential to their quality of life”, says Debbie Denton, San Carlos resident and Foundation Board member. “ Unfortunately, over the last decade the city’s budget has dwindled. Our goal is to meet the gap between city resources and citizens’ expectations. “The Parks & Recreation Foundation has held several fundraising drives since its inception, but the most unique is the Symphony at Sunset. The event will feature a full professional orchestra and light fare from local restaurants, as well as wine tasting and an auction. “The Symphony at Sunset was conceived by the Parks & Recreation Foundation as a kickoff fundraiser for the Burton Park Phase II Renovation,” says Chairperson John Baer, “ but the Symphony at Sunset is more than a fundraiser.  It’s an evening of festivity among neighbors in support of our community.”
Tickets for the Symphony at Sunset are $50 for individual seating. Tables for four and eight are available as well. For more details and to purchase tickets click here.
