Moment of Truth for Measure A

May 2, 2011

Budget Update Makes Measure A Passage More Dire
Those who have campaigned and worked so hard for the passage of Measure A are about to find out if their efforts will pay off.  The end of the mail-in, May 3rd election is upon us. The importance of Measure A to the San Carlos School District became even more pronounced yesterday with the release of Dr. Craig Baker’s Budget Update.  Dr. Baker’s update hinted at previously unknown cuts that will further hamper the District’s funding levels in 2012.  To read a full copy of Dr. Baker’s Budget Update, please click here.
The Specifics of Measure A
Measure A is a proposed extension of a $110 yearly parcel tax for the benefit of San Carlos schools. The former measure was put into place in 2003 and will now expire.  Measure A will continue the parcel tax. Measure A requires a super majority in order to pass.  In this case, the super majority requires that 67% of all ballots cast, be cast in favor of Measure A in order for it to pass.
Opinion
I normally try to bring out community issues, such as Measure A, on the blog and have others in the community steer the discussion.  In this instance, I am going to offer my own two cents.  Because of the school related issues covered on this blog and my direct involvement with our schools and the San Carlos Educational Foundation, I see just how desperate the financial situation truly has become.  Also, through of my involvement in the San Carlos real estate world I see just how vital the schools are to our property values as well.  The passage of Measure A is critical for our schools and community. Nobody likes the thought of paying a parcel tax, but this is one instance where the ends more than justifies the means.

Bob,
Thanks for your support of Measure A. It is a critical revenue stream that is needed to maintain the great schools that we have in San Carlos. Thanks to the innovative work of Dr. Baker and the generous support of parents and the local community, we are able to provide a top notch program at our schools. We are in crunch time in many ways and it is important to get your vote in to support Measure A.
Adam
