San Mateo County Considers New Jail Site in San Carlos

July 18, 2009

Yes, you read that correctly.  Over the past two years San Mateo County has been trying to identify a site to build a new jail to help with overcrowding. After an exhaustive study, the County came up with a list of the top 7 most likely sites in San Mateo County.  Two of those sites fall in San Carlos.  Falling at #4, is 345 Shoreway.  Coming in at #7, is 767 Industrial.  As you can imagine, the communities surrounding those potential sites are not exactly welcoming the possibility of a jail with open arms.  To help better inform the community and answer any questions that residents may have, the County has set up a community meeting from 7:00-9:00 pm at the San Carlos Library on July 22, 2009. For more information about the proposed jail, including the studies, FAQs and County input, please click here.

This is a dangerous decision that will draw down the house prices further and affect the econmony of San Mateo County! Think about all companies and all residents will move out of this area.
San Mateo County decision makers! Please be clear minded! If you still want to collect any tax: sales tax, property tax, income tax. Think it over.

This is a very affluent neighborhood. Why would somebody want to build a jail right in the middle of it. It will result in overall reduction in the value of the property and thereby the property taxes. The local businesses will also be impacted. Needles to say, the safety and security of the citizens living in the nearby communities could be compromised. This is a loose/loose situation for everybody. Why not consider building nice Hotels and Shops catering to the huge Economy created by companies like Oracle, PG&E, Kaiser, Visa etc.
