What is Healthy Cities Tutoring?

Healthy Cities Tutoring began in San Carlos in 1996 and was administered by the City of San Carlos.  The program began as a pilot program at one school in San Carlos helping students in kindergarten through third grade and within a few years expanded to serve struggling students at six schools in grades kindergarten through eighth.  Due to increased budget demands placed on both the City of San Carlos and the San Carlos School District, the program lost most of its funding in June of 2011.  The current Executive Director, who has been with the program since its inception, along with a committed group of volunteers, educators, business leaders and elected officials did not want the program to die with the loss of funding and reestablished the program as a 501(c)(3) in September 2011.  The program now has strong roots in San Carlos and many supporters and partners.  HCT is now in place with a committed Board of Directors and a fund raising plan work toward sustainability.

Who Does Healthy Cities Tutoring Help?

Essentially, HCT helps students who are struggling in school.  Community volunteers provide one-on-one tutoring and mentoring. Concerns that often prompt a referral into HCT include:
*  The child that is below grade level and struggles to complete homework, answer questions in class and is falling behind his or her peers in other classwork.
*  The child that sits alone at lunch.
*  The child that has recently lost a parent or is struggling with other pressures at home that impact a child’s sense of self and their ability to cope with the demands of school and life.
*  Embarrassment over language or writing difficulties.

How You Can Help

HCT needs your help.  If you can spare an hour or two each week to work with a struggling student, you can make a tremendous difference.  HCT currently has more students in need than mentors available.  They offer flexible scheduling, training and the chance to make a meaningful impact on a San Carlos student in need.
Upcoming Training and Orientation for Tutors

8:30-10:30 am or 6:30-8:30 pm at White Oaks School
