July 12, 2012

Job Opening at SCEF for Spring Fling Director

Spring Fling Director Job Description
Event date: March 2, 2013
The San Carlos Education Foundation is recruiting a new Spring Fling Director. Spring Fling is the primary fundraiser for the San Carlos School District, and raises over $500K to support the seven K-8 schools in the district. Without SCEF and Spring Fling, the district would not be able to fund critical programs in our schools (Music, technology, library, P.E. and many other resources that our kids and families value).
About the San Carlos Education Foundation
SCEF was created in 1982 using proceeds from San Carlos’ beloved Chickens’ Ball to ensure that there was a continuing source of funding for arts and music in our schools. At that time, our educational system received far more funding than it does today and we raised less than $30,000 a year.
The level of education funding in the state of California has changed significantly since SCEF was founded. In just the last five years, the state of California has reduced education spending by more than $1,450 per student.
In fact, adjusted for inflation, California invests less on education now than at any point since or during the Great Depression.
Unfortunately, not all school districts are funded equally. In fact, compared to the eight other elementary districts that feed into the Sequoia Union High School District, San Carlos receives the LEAST amount of money to educate our children.

SCEF exists to bridge this gap, so that San Carlos children receive a well-rounded education that rivals that of private schools and is equivalent to nearby districts, despite the incredible funding disparity that exists.
Today, SCEF raises more than $2 million to pay for critical staff and programs at all seven San Carlos public schools. Schools receive equitable grants from SCEF based on the number of children at the school site and the grades the site supports.
We raise money primarily through our Annual Giving Campaign. Money is also raised by Spring Fling, our annual auction gala.
SCEF is a registered 501(c)3 charity. Our Tax ID is 94-2842712.
About Spring Fling: Spring Fling is a community wide event that has raised over $500K for the seven San Carlos schools this past year. The current Spring Fling (SF) Director has led this effort for the past 2 years and will be helping to recruit the new SF Director. We are looking for someone who is very organized and motivated to reach out to local business and community partners to educate them on the role SCEF plays in our community, and to get donations and auction items to help continue and expand on the success of Spring Fling. The SF Director also works closely with parent volunteers and parent donors from each of the 7 schools to ensure the success of this primary fundraiser. The hours of this position vary, and all work can be done at home on a telecommuting basis.
Estimated Hours: August-September- very minimal (15 or less hours a week), October-March- (20-40 hours a week), April-June- very minimal (10 hours or less a week).
Required skills and experience:
A background in fundraising, sales, event planning, business development, marketing or related skills and experience is a huge plus
Good phone skills, comfortable making cold calls to business owners, parents and other community partners to ask for donations
A strong belief in the mission and purpose of SCEF, and a desire to be a champion of SCEF in the community
This is a paid position and salary is based on experience. If interested, please email your resume to: Cris Adair, Spring Fling Director, crisadair@comcast.net
