The San Carlos/Belmont Mothers’ Club is currently 1,000+ members strong and has a tremendous following in San Carlos and in the surrounding towns. Sharron Penn is a Board Member with SCBMC and she was kind enough to grant my request for an interview and spend some time talking to me in detail about the SCBMC.
“Mothers Helping Mothers” is the mission of SCBMC. The SCBMC provides an online forum to help mothers with young children deal with just about any and all possible issues that could arise. Topics range from discussions on schools, toddler and baby products, the working mom, kid-friendly places in town, to recommended getaways for mom and dad. The SCBMC also has an entire classified section for items such as baby/toddler clothes, furniture, toys and much more. With the SCBMC, members have the security of knowing that the person responding to their classified listing is another member of SCBMC. This same security does not exist with other classified sites such as craigslist.
The SCBMC also acts as a facilitator for arranging play dates among moms with similar schedules. Penn indicated that in some of these instances, friendships made through these play dates last years beyond the moms’ membership in the SCBMC.
For those moms interested in pursuing other interests through SCBMC, there are a variety of clubs that are offered to the members such as the environment club on the more serious side to the wine club on the more social side
Donation and community support are critical elements in the SCBMC. The “In a Pinch” meal service is a very nice feature of the club as well. A mother just having a new baby, or a mother who becomes sick can depend on a free meal for her family from another member of the club. Also, the SCBMC donates one-third of its annual revenues to local charities. Last year, the SCBMC donated to the San Carlos Educational Foundation and the 4-H Club in San Carlos, among several others.
One of the most popular events for the SCBMC is the Mothers’ Day Celebration which takes place during the week before Mothers’ Day. This is an evening of pampering for members. Local pampering professionals donate their time to the club and meet at the Twin Pines Community Center. Members are treated to massages, manicures and possibly a new hairstyle.
The cost to join the SCBMC is $40 for one year, or $70 for two years. Members join from San Carlos, Belmont and the surrounding towns. Also, please note that the SCBMC is hosting a New Member Social from 7-8pm at the Reading Bug on Laurel Street in San Carlos on Thursday, January 27th. The SAN CARLOS SCHOOL DISTRICT will be accepting centralized REGISTRATION for incoming kindergarten and transitional kindergarten students for the 2013-2014 school year!
Over a 5-month period, the District will be accepting early registration forms for incoming kindergartners and transitional kindergartners. There is no need to rush, as school assignments are NOT handled on a first-come, first-served basis.
WHEN: October 1, 2012 through March 1, 2013
WHO: Children who will have turned 5 years of age by October 1, 2013 are eligible for kindergarten. Those children who will turn 5 years of age between October 2nd and December 2nd of 2013, are eligible to participate in the District’s Transitional Kindergarten program.

As always, it is a high priority that we place students in their desired neighborhood school. In the case where a school is over enrolled, we will apply additional criteria to determine the order of placement of students.
Please note that we are NOT expecting to be able to approve any out-of-district charter in the 2013-14 school year
